Today I had another parent conference after school, so by the time I got home I had missed saying hello to our maid, Khadija (khu-deezh-ah) and was feeling like, lately, all I do is go to meetings and run errands and I am never home when she is there - but she is a great worker and each weeknight I come home to a spotless house with everything put away (not always in

the place I am looking for it, but tidy and put away none-the-less!) This is a rare picture from Christmas, when the kids convinced her to sit with them and have a cup of hot cocoa - I have only seen her relaxing briefly on a handful of other occasions. She is an important addition to our family, not just someone who cleans up after us, and I was missing her... missing our lively conversations which often included a variation of charades to help ease the flow of communication, and usually ended in smiles and laughter. So, as I was making pancake batter (see the next post) for dinner, I reached into the silverware drawer for a tablespoon and found this! I guess she loves me too! Friendship is good and love is the same in any language!

(It was delicious - an apple upside down cake! And so clever of her to hide it in a place the kids would be less likely to look when scavenging for after-school-snacks!)
